When savings are running out

Plan the transition before the money is gone.

Quick answer

Plan the transition six months ahead: confirm whether the current home will keep a resident on program support, start the Medicaid or MI Choice application early, and check VA eligibility; Michigan's 2026 Medicaid asset limit for one person is $9,950 in the SSI-related categories (BEM 400).

What happens when a parent's savings for care are running out in Michigan?

Plan the transition six months ahead: confirm whether the current home will keep a resident on program support, start the Medicaid or MI Choice application early, and check VA eligibility; Michigan's 2026 Medicaid asset limit for one person is $9,950 in the SSI-related categories (BEM 400).

The worst outcome is a forced move when the money is gone. The second-worst is spending down without a plan and missing protections for a spouse.

Will an AFC home or home for the aged keep a resident after private funds run out?

Some will, many won't. Medicaid does not pay room and board in these settings, so the home must accept whatever income the resident has plus any program payments.

Ask this before move-in and get the answer in writing. If the answer is no, plan which home or nursing home your parent would move to.

How does Medicaid protect a spouse who stays at home?

Michigan protects a share of the couple's assets for the community spouse -- in 2026 at least $32,532 and up to $162,660 under the half-of-assets rule (BEM 402) -- and allows income to be shifted to the at-home spouse.

Can VA benefits help when money is short?

For wartime veterans and surviving spouses, yes: the 2026 Aid and Attendance maximum is $29,093 a year for a veteran alone, and care costs can be deducted from income to qualify.

VA Aid and Attendance.

What counts toward Michigan's Medicaid asset limit?

Cash, bank accounts, investments and most property other than an exempt home count; MDHHS decides what is countable for each applicant under its eligibility manual.

Gifts and transfers for less than fair market value during Medicaid's look-back period can cause a penalty. Spending down on care, home repairs or prepaid funeral arrangements is treated differently -- get advice before moving money.

Who can help with a Medicaid application in West Michigan?

MDHHS county offices take applications and MI Bridges handles them online; nursing home business offices, MI Choice agents, PACE programs and elder law attorneys all help families through the process.

Gather bank statements, insurance policies, deeds and income records for the period MDHHS asks for before you start.

Should a family pay a parent's bills from their own savings?

Be careful: paying is fine, but signing as a guarantor can make you personally responsible, and informal payments can complicate Medicaid eligibility later.
