How much is VA Aid and Attendance in 2026?
For December 1, 2025 through November 30, 2026, the maximum annual pension rate with Aid and Attendance is $29,093 for a veteran with no dependents, $34,488 with one dependent, and $46,143 when two married veterans both qualify. The net worth limit is $163,699.
Last verified: October 2026| Household | Basic pension | Housebound | Aid and Attendance |
|---|---|---|---|
| Veteran, no dependents | $17,441 | $21,313 | $29,093 |
| Veteran, one dependent | $22,839 | $26,710 | $34,488 |
Add $2,984 for each additional dependent.
How does Aid and Attendance pay for assisted living or home care?
The pension pays the difference between the MAPR and the household's countable income; unreimbursed care costs (including assisted living or in-home care) can be deducted from income, which is how many families with moderate income still qualify.
Only medical expenses above 5% of the MAPR count ($872 for a veteran with no dependents; $1,141 with one dependent). Assisted living and in-home care costs can count as unreimbursed medical expenses when the care is needed because of disability. That is why a veteran with a pension and Social Security that look too high on paper can still qualify once the monthly bill from a home is subtracted.
What is the VA's look-back rule?
The VA reviews asset transfers made in the three years before a pension claim; transfers for less than fair market value that would have pushed net worth over the limit can trigger a penalty period of up to five years. The policy took effect October 18, 2018.
Michigan Medicaid has its own, separate look-back rules. Planning that helps with one can hurt with the other, so talk to an accredited VA representative or elder law attorney before moving money.
Where can West Michigan veterans get help applying?
County veterans service offices and accredited veterans service organizations help with pension claims at no charge; be wary of anyone charging a fee to file.
For nursing care, the Michigan Veteran Homes at Grand Rapids on Monroe Avenue NE is the state veterans home for the region, with 128 certified beds and a 5 of 5-star overall rating on Care Compare (see its record).
Who is eligible for VA pension with Aid and Attendance?
Wartime veterans (and surviving spouses) who meet the VA's service, income and net worth rules and who need help with daily activities, are bedridden, are in a nursing home because of disability, or have limited eyesight.
Surviving spouses have their own, lower rate table on the VA site. Apply with VA Form 21-2680, completed by a physician, to document the need for aid and attendance.
