What is Grand Rapids Senior Advisor?

Grand Rapids Senior Advisor is a free referral and advisory service for families looking at senior care in Kent, Ottawa, Allegan, Montcalm and Ionia counties. We are paid by communities when a family moves in, never by the family.

The site exists because the information West Michigan families need is public but scattered. Michigan's licensing agency publishes every adult foster care home and home for the aged, with its license dates and inspection reports. Medicare publishes star ratings, staffing and citations for every nursing home. Hardly anyone reads either before touring. We put both side by side for every home in the region, and a local advisor helps you narrow the list.

Because referral fees can bias advice, we say so up front and explain it in full on how we are paid.

How does Michigan license assisted living and memory care?

It doesn't, by those names. Michigan's LARA licenses homes for the aged (21 or more residents age 55+) and adult foster care homes (from six-bed family homes to congregate facilities), and nursing homes separately. Our five counties have 55 homes for the aged and 288 adult foster care homes that serve older adults.

Memory care is not a license either. A home for the aged or nursing home that markets dementia care must give families a written description of that program under MCL 333.20178. Start with the HFA vs. AFC explainer.

What does senior care cost in West Michigan?

The sourced benchmark is statewide: CareScout's 2025 Michigan medians are $69,000 a year for assisted living, $135,050 for a semi-private nursing home room and $79,508 for 44 hours a week of home care.

Last verified: October 2026

No Grand Rapids-specific or memory care median is published; we do not invent one. Full cost table and how to read it.
